AIR FORCE BASE TAMALE AND AFTRAC SUPPORT EXERCISES FLINTLOCK AND AFRICAN LION

The Air Force Base Tamale and Air Force Training Command (AFTRAC) played a pivotal role in two multinational exercises, FLINTLOCK and AFRICAN LION which drew participants from over 46 countries.

AFTRAC, which is co-located at the Air Force Base Tamale, provided accommodation, an Operations Room, a liaison office, a medical aid post and kitchen facilities. Space was also provided for other vital equipment and logistics meant for the exercises.

The Base housed and provided security for all visiting aircraft and other assets of the participating countries. The Operations Cell of the Base was instrumental in the receipt and dispatch of these aircraft which took part in various exercise scenarios.

Additionally, the Base which is the home of the Number Two Transport Wing of the Ghana Air Force operating the CASA C295 transported participants, logistics and stakeholders to and fro the venue. The Base also contributed personnel for air liaison duties, logistics, public relations, and security among others to ensure the success of the exercises.

The two exercises, held annually, are aimed at enhancing cooperation on trans-regional security issues and boosting the ability of partner nations to conduct cross-border security operations, counter violent extremism and ensure the operational readiness of Special Forces operatives.

Some highlights of the two-week exercise included a Medical and Civic Outreach programme and a Distinguished Visitor’s Day, culminating in a Combined Joint Exercise and a closing ceremony held on Friday 24 May 2024.
