CDS STRESSES THE NEED TO ACQUIRE NEW AIRCRAFT TO SAFEGUARD GHANA’S AIR SPACE.

The Chief of the Defence Staff (CDS), Lt Gen Thomas Oppong-Peprah, has emphasised the critical need to acquire new aircraft to augment the Ghana Air Force fleet. These acquisitions which would include light attack and transport aircraft would support operational tasks, surveillance of the territorial air space, and transportation of personnel, logistics and emergency response operations.

Lt Gen Oppong-Peprah made these assertions during his visit to the Air Force Headquarters (AFHQ) on Tuesday 25 June, 2024 at the Oje Hall.

As an effective measure to curb air space violations and safeguard the territorial integrity of Ghana, the CDS mentioned the need for an Air Defence Radar System. He asserted that such surveillance devices when installed along the borders under the supervision of the Ghana Air Force would enhance national security and deter any external aggressors.

Additionally, the CDS addressed ongoing efforts to ensure the serviceability of existing platforms, improvement in infrastructure projects and the training of personnel to build upon their capacity. Lt Gen Oppong-Peprah also commended the Ghana Air Force for the progress made despite the challenges.

Upon his arrival at the AFHQ, the CDS inspected a guard of honor after which he and his entourage proceeded to a conference room for a briefing session.

During the briefing, the Director Air Operations, Group Captain Fiifi Adu Boadu, highlighted operational and administrative matters. Other key topics included the current state of aircraft, air support for Peace Support Operations, assistance in Military Exercises and the anticipated role of the Air Force in Operation Peace Trail during the upcoming general elections.

As a token of appreciation, the CDS presented a plaque and a cash amount to the Ghana Air Force.  The visit was climaxed with a tour of the Headquarters for the CDS and his entourage to acquaint themselves with the operations of the various branches.
