AFHQ PERSONNEL SENSITISED ON SUICIDE AWARENESS AND PREVENTION

The Duala Medical Centre (DMC), in collaboration with the 37 Military Hospital Therapy and Wellness Department (TWD) have held a sensitisation talk on suicide awareness and prevention on Thursday 26 September 2024 at the Air Force Headquarters.

According to Madam Doris Agbedor who is a health promotion officer, the  aim of the campaign was to create awareness about the increasing rate of suicide around the globe. She highlighted the signs to watch out for among individuals that included isolation, extreme mood swings, drastic behaviour change and giving away important items.

She further indicated that suicide is the leading cause of death among individuals aged 15-19 and men under 45 years. Statically, seven hundred thousand (700,000) people commit suicide yearly worldwide with fifteen thousand (15,000) suicide cases occurring in Ghana. She added that suicide is not a normal response to stress.

She urged personnel to seek professional help whenever they have suicidal thoughts regardless of their gender and further advise them to look out for each other.
