78TH ANNIVERSARY OF 28TH FEBRUARY CROSSROADS SHOOTING INCIDENT COMMEMORATED

The 78th Anniversary of the 28th February Crossroads Shooting Incident was solemnly commemorated on Saturday, 28 February 2026, at the Nationalism Park, Osu, in Accra. The ceremony brought together state officials, security services, traditional authorities, veterans, and families of the fallen in a dignified act of national remembrance.

The annual observance honours the memory of three ex-servicemen, Sergeant Adjetey, Corporal Attipoe, and Private Odartey Lamptey, who were tragically shot on 28 February 1948 while marching peacefully to present a petition to the then Governor, Sir Gerald Creasy, at Christiansborg Castle. Their sacrifice became a defining moment in Ghana’s struggle for independence and remains etched in the nation’s history.

The commemorative ceremony was marked by a solemn parade mounted by personnel of the Ghana Armed Forces and the Ghana Police Service, a reverent flag-raising, and the laying of wreaths in honour of the fallen heroes.

During the wreath-laying ceremony, the Vice President of the Republic of Ghana, Her Excellency Professor Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang, laid the first wreath on behalf of the Government and the people of Ghana. The Chief of the Defence Staff, Lieutenant General William Agyapong, laid the second wreath on behalf of the Ghana Armed Forces and other security services.

The third wreath was laid by the National Chairman of the Veterans Association of Ghana (VAG), Rear Admiral Peter Kofi Faidoo (Rtd), on behalf of veterans. The fourth wreath was laid by the Osu Alata Mantse, Nii Kwabena Bonnie V, representing traditional authorities. The final wreath was laid by Mr David Hammond, a representative of Corporal Attipoe’s family, on behalf of the families of the fallen soldiers.

The ceremony concluded in a reflective atmosphere, reaffirming the nation’s enduring gratitude to the gallant men whose ultimate sacrifice helped shape Ghana’s path to freedom.
